Boxers and Boners: A Puberty Guide
During puberty, a person goes through many physical, emotional and social changes. Boys usually begin puberty between the ages of 9 and 15, and it may take five to seven years for all of the changes to occur. The most obvious of these changes include a growth spurt; the voice becoming deeper; shoulders becoming broader; hair growth on the face, around the genitals and underarms; and the genitals growing larger. Some boys may experience acne, and their sweat may develop a strong odor. Some may also experience slight breast growth that can be embarrassing but usually resolves on its own.
The changes of puberty enable people to physically reproduce. During puberty, testosterone triggers the testicles to initiate making sperm, so the penis can now ejaculate. During puberty, some boys experience wet dreams or nocturnal emissions, when ejaculation occurs spontaneously during sleep. Dripping dreams are normal, though not everyone has them. Many boys also experience spontaneous erections during puberty. Again, it’s normal if they do, and normal if they don’t.
Is It Normal to Get Erections?
Erections are a normal part of the way the male body works, mainly during puberty.
What Is an Erection?
An erection is when the penis gets hard because sponge-like tissue in it fills with blood. Erections tend to make the penis get bigger and stand away from the body.
Erections can go away on their own or after ejaculation (the release of semen through the small hole at the tip of the penis).
Ejaculating at night during sleep is called a nocturnal emission or “wet dream.” You can have several erections each night during sleep.
What Causes Erections?
The hormones (chemical messengers) that trigger puberty cause a lot of changes in the body. One of these is erections.
Many erections are caused by sexual arousal, like watching a sexy show or having a fantasy. But a lot of erections seem to happen for no real reason.
If you've had an erection at an odd time — like in the middle of a boring lesson — there's nothing wrong with you. Your body is acting normally for someone your age.

Rising to the occasion
Also known as 'hard-ons' and 'stiffies', boys will begin to experience erections as soon as they start to mature sexually.
It can occur at quite a young age and even happens in some infants, although for different reasons. This functional, yet sometimes embarrassing, experience heralds the start of a boy's life as a fertile adult.
Erections are caused when blood flows to the penis. It builds up inside it causing pressure. Inside the penis are cavernous spaces that fill up with blood and cause swelling. The swelling, caused by this extra blood, blocks off the veins that normally take blood away from the penis.
When this happens, the blood pressure inside the penis rises dramatically and it enlarges and stiffens, pointing upwards. As an erection disappears, the arteries in the penis narrow again. Then the veins open, removing the blood again and the flow returns to normal.
Ejaculation
Once the testicles begin to grow they also develop their adult function - producing sperm. Millions of sperm - maybe million in a day - are created in tubes called 'seminif
The Uninvited Guest
Although uninvited boners occur frequently throughout puberty, it’s not uncommon to experience an inconvenient boner as an adult. Just as morning boners can be caused by an increase in testosterone when waking, random erections can be caused by fluctuations in hormones throughout the night. This type of boner is not very forgiving as they can happen at any hour – yes, even at a formal event, before giving a presentation, while working out, etc. The list goes on and on, as mostly any general place or event is an “awkward” place to find your penis standing at attention. If this has happened to you, don’t worry. You can only go up from here (no pun intended)! While these random erections are usually not a cause for concern, if you notice a sudden change in the frequency of your erections, you should speak with a medical provider, as this may be a sign of a medical condition.
The Classic
Now that we’ve discussed unwanted boners in-depth, let’s talk about the wanted boner! Psychogenic erections occur when you think of sexual fantasies or memories and can happen
