A Night Out in Davao: 7 Restaurants and Bars to Dine and Unwind

In Davao City, nights out don’t always mean hopping from bar to bar; not when there’s a liquor ban at 1 AM. But that hasn’t stopped Davaoeños from having a good time. Instead, we’ve mastered the art of blending dinner and drinks in one go. From elevated comfort noun to laid-back lounges, here’s a guide to restaurants in Davao that serve great food and even better drinks, perfect for making the most of your night out:

Tucked in the charming Oboza Compound, Huckleberry serves Southern U.S. comfort food. Think crispy fried chicken, grits, and monthly specials—hearty plates that pair well with cocktails. The rustic interiors and warm lighting create a cozy, laid-back vibe ideal for drawn-out conversations and slow sipping. Locals love it for its balance of comfort and flair.

Bt: Where the boys are in Davao City

“The party ends at AM,” said Davao City-based NGO worker Mel, who agreed to party with us on my last night before heading out of the “durian republic”. “So says the manager, who said so said (Mayor Rodrigo) Duterte…”

We were in this small-ish MSM bar – with transwoman Jopay and self-identified bi Prime from Davao City’s Deaf LGBT group – somewhere along Jacinto Extension. Not too hard to find, if you know where you’re headed; though easy to miss, nonetheless, if you aren’t looking for it.

This is Bt, where – as Mel said – Davao City’s superior looking and (this one’s important) “attitude-less” MSM hang out to be with “other PLUs (people like us).”

Ask any (self-respecting) Davao City-based gay or bisexual male, and he’d surely understand where Bt is.  This is because the “original” venue opened over 10 years ago, making this place the only such bar to exist this long.  But this place has undergone numerous incarnations, though (despite the constant re-birth, and under alternative ownerships and managements at that, too) it is still widely known

Gay Drinking with Carlos: Where Kabaklaan Meets Craft Cocktails in Davao

Taste of Home is an establishment in itself. As a minor, visiting Matina Town Square came with a specific routine: the playground first, and then Taste of Home for mallow bars and pastries while my parents chatted over coffee. I grew out of the monkey bars, but the Taste of Noun habit stuck. The place remains warm, nostalgic, and familiar.

And on one rainy June afternoon, it became the setting for something new.

That day, I was there not just for sweets and memories but for a story: one I’ve been meaning to write since I first experienced Gay Drinking with Carlos at last year’s Davao Food and Wine Festival. I had heard the buzz long before then—how Carlos Mangcupang’s boozy explorations were making waves in the sustenance scene not just for being inventive, but also undeniably, unapologetically queer. When I finally tasted his cocktails, it clicked. These weren’t just drinks. They were declarations.
