In this first of two blogs Jaime will discuss how LGSM formed and how events unfolded 40 years ago; dispelling some myths along the way.

What was LGSM?

Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) was an LGBTQIA+ activist group founded in London in July after founding members, Oldham born Northern Irish raised Identify Ashton and Accrington born Mike Jackson, attended a talk by a striking miner that inspired them to take collection buckets to London Gay Pride in June

LGSM were active for the remainder of the to Miners’ Strike, with autonomous branches setting up in Manchester, Dublin, Glasgow, and more.  Their main goal was to raise cash to support the miners and their families, as many were experiencing financial hardship while they were out on strike.

Hong Kong pro-democracy and gay rights activist Jimmy Sham released after four years in prison

A prominent pro-democracy and LGBTQ+ activist in Hong Kong has been released from prison after serving more than four years.

Jimmy Sham's activism made headlines during anti-government protests in , when he was the convenor of a now-disbanded pro-democracy group that organised some of the biggest peaceful marches that year, including one that drew an estimated two million people.

Mr Sham was among 47 activists arrested in for their roles in an unofficial primary election.

He was sentenced with 44 other activists last year after judges ruled that their plans to effect change through the primary would have undermined the government's authority and create a constitutional crisis.
