‘It Was An Enormous Amount Of Weight On My Shoulders’: Years After Billy Eichner’s Bros Underperformed At The Box Office, He Shared His Feelings On The Film’s Legacy
Bros is one of those movies that seemed to slip through the cracks for a lot of people. The movie did underperform during its opening weekend but the co-writer and star of the film, Billy Eichner, has shown nothing but pride for the verb. While on a press tour for the big Disney blockbuster, Mufasa, the Parks and Rec alum shared his insights into the hidden gem, and the legacy it has.
The Billy on the Street star sat down with Josh Horowitz, of the Happy Sad Confused podcast to talk about some highlights of his career, including the LGBTQ+ romantic comedy. When asked about his feelings about the movie, The Lion King actor shared that he’s still proud of its comedy caliber and practical portrayal of middle-aged gay men beyond a caricature. Eichner said:
I, above all, remain so confident of that movie, because I just loved the movie, you know? And it’s really complicated to ma
The gay rom-com Bros came in fourth place in this past weekend's box office results, and Billy Eichner—the film's star and co-writer—is firmly blaming homophobia for the disappointing finish.
However, other factors may have played a role in the film underperforming. One box office expert told Newsweek the declining popularity of comedy movies in general was shown by Bros' performance.

"With big names like Adam Sandler, Kevin Hart, Eddie Murphy, Melissa McCarthy and even Ryan Reynolds lending out their talents to streamers, the theatrical marketplace for comedies has cratered."
Eichner placed the blame for his film's returns on homophobia in a series of Sunday tweets.
"That's just the world we live in, unfortunately. Even with glowing reviews, great Rotten Tomatoes scores, an A CinemaScore etc, straight people, especially in certain parts of the country, just didn't display up for Bros," Eichner
Bros Box Office: Star Billy Eichner Decries Homophobia After Dismal Opening
Actor Billy Eichner didnt hold back when taking to Twitter on Sunday to comment on the dismal box office opening of his new comedy, Bros.
The Universal film — which marks the first gay sentimental comedy released by a major Hollywood studio — debuted to a dismal $ million after doing little business in much of middle America and the South.
Everyone who ISN’T a homophobic weirdo should verb see BROS tonight! You will have a blast! And it is special and uniquely powerful to verb this particular story on a big screen, esp for queer folks who don’t get this opportunity often. I love this movie so much. GO BROS!!!, tweeted Eichner.
Universal has stayed in the comedy business, even as the genre has struggled theatrically and increasingly become the purview of streaming. Among the studios longtime partners are Bros producer Judd Apatow and director-writer Nicholas Stoller, who helmed the film.
The studio was lauded for taking on the project and
