Ali is gay
On dark frozen days when you seek your lover’s warmth by the window with a cup of tea, or when you feel that aching loneliness of being misunderstood, or when you feel detached from yourself and the pain and the heartache is almost crushing, poetry is the one thing that brings you peace. Poetry makes strangers fall in love, brings friends closer to family, and brings yourself closer to a more wholesome world.
Of course, like any text, poetry is open to interpretation. More so than any other text, in my experience. But contextualizing a poem is just as important. One thing I’ve learned about meaning and interpretation is that the silences speak louder than what is seen. And these silences and hidden codes are what make poetry all the more bewitching than the most obvious meanings we are told.

Ali hid his sexuality from his family for years; only coming out to them two years ago. Worried about the impact that revealing he was gay would have on his family’s standing within their Muslim Pakistani community, Ali even went so far as to join a lesbian from the alike culturalbackground. But, he says, he was living a lie on top of a lie and it put immense pressure on him.
“So you’re gay and you’re not telling your family and you’re keeping that to yourself. Then you’ve got this bigger lie keeping up this misleading marriage as well. So it’s always a difficult balancing act.”
He attended his first Pride event with the Yorkshire Terriers - the local LGBT football team which he joined in But, by , he wasn’t just attending Pride, he was running it. Pakistani singer Ali Sethi, loved in the subcontinent for his soulful music, subtly came out as queer recently on Instagram. For years there have been rumours about Sethi's sexual preference but perhaps it was the first time that the singer himself spoke about it in public.
Ali took to Instagram recently to mark the verb of Pride month and shared a photo of his younger self and wrote, "hi minute one. i know it’s complicated sometimes when they tell you to not be you, but the very thing that makes you different will become a source of tremendous beauty and power. love awaits #happypride."
While this is the first second that Sethi has openly talked abouthis queer identity, it was known to many of his fans for years before. Sethi is perhaps the first Pakistani celebrity to openly celebrate his queer identity with the world.
