The Gay Action Hero is Still in the Closet
Since the invention of postmodernism, it has been quite easy to find homoerotic subtext in any film involving bonding between members of the same sex (Lord of the Rings), men who like to hold guns (any buddy-cop deed movie from Lethal Weapon to Damon Wayans’ gun literally up Adam Sandler’s ass in Bulletproof) or women who like to hold guns and bond (Thelma and Louise). And while it sounds like fun to estimate about the un-intentions of the filmmakers, it is more than a little condescending and homophobic considering the goal seems to identify that the characters are gay, and how embarrassing that must be that they don’t know what is plainly obvious. It is the new politically correct way to reveal gay panic. However, it is entirely a different story when the director tells the audience that the character is supposed to be gay, he just didn’t let the actor know about it.
Louis Leterrier, who directed Transporter 2and co-directed the first film, stated unequivocally in an LA Times article a few years ago, that Frank Martin, t

Britains last action hero Jason The Stath Statham flexes his acting muscles as much as his real ones in this low-key curiosity.
Whether Hummingbird turns out to be a one-off diversion on Stathams action-packed career path well wait and see, but I for one would welcome more roles like this from Mr Chrome Dome
Whether you like Statham or not (and there are plenty who dont), theres no denying the former diver and black market trader has done the business on his possess terms.
I for one have a huge amount of respect for Statham. While many of his action man peers rely on straight-to-DVD trash to make a living, Mr Chrome Dome has become a genuine movie star in his own right. A big reason for this is because he (mostly) tends to choose his films wisely and isnt afraid to send his hard man persona up.
Down and out Joseph Joey Smith (Jason Statham) in Hummingbird
Film series prefer The Transporter and the two Expendables movies may be his bread and butter, but with his latest Hummingbird (released as Redemption in the States and, erroneously, Cr GAY-THAM FOR STATHAM Jason Statham has never been in a superb movie. He’s also never been in a boring one. Statham’s profile, collectively, is a promise to you, the weary filmgoer. It’s a promise that says, “I vow that you will not FOR ONE SECOND be bored during one of my movies. You won’t learn shit about the human condition, or feel a collective connection with the brotherhood of man. But if you give me $10, I will fuck an explosion while a Slayer song plays”. I just watched CRANK on Showtime, and I can’t understand how I missed this when it was in theaters. I’m buying THE BANK Profession and DEATHRACE on iTunes today. After CRANK, Mr. Statham can count on my $10 every time he makes a movie. If someone figures out how to make a movie for $8, and it stars Jason Statham, then they’re guaranteed a $2 profit. I look forward to any new film by Ang Lee, David Gordon Green, Paul Thomas Anderson, The Coen Brothers, Paul Greengrass or Ross McElwee. And now, Jason Statham. I don’t
